making a photogram

Photogram

A photogram is a photographic image that is made without a camera, but by placing objects on light sensitive material then exposing it to light in a dark room. The paper is then developed using light sensitive chemicals.

This cameraless photography technique gives sort of a photographic picture but it displays tones in order opposite from the reality.

Man Ray

Man Ray was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. He was a significant contribution to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal.

He was best known for his pioneering photography, and he was a renowned fashion portrait photographer. Man Ray is also noted for his work with photograms, which he called "rayographs" (Rayogram) in reference to himself.
