Edward Hopper

"nighthawks"

Realism is the art movement which relates to honestly representing the world through paintings or photographs and ensuring that it looks like it should, or what it is, and as real as possible, avoiding anything that would make it seem supernatural or simply unrealistic.

Edward Hopper was a Realism artist born in 1882, his work was mainly based around the early 20th century. The art he created mainly captures the loneliness and isolation of urban settings, depicting common emotions from during the world wars and the great depression.

It says in sources that that Hopper's paintings 'exemplify social distancing,' not necessarily in the way that we would while we were in the pandemic, but more in a sense of realistic social ideologies.

It could also show the separation between those with a partner and without, which is shown with the people in the image above, with man sat by himself and the other two people further along who appear to be together. The image here is also set during night time this for many is a solitary time this then further shows the solitude of modern day life. To further do this within hoppers other works he uses an extreme theme of light and dark.

My Interpretation

I chose to take a photo of McDonald's at around morning time where it is usually quiet, to show the subtle distance of the people waiting for or eating their food inside.
